Optimizing Water Management with Integrated IoT Intelligence

Our client needed a solution that connected the physical and digital: A service management system that centralized real-time data insights for fleet operations and services.

The Client

Our client provides water management and chemical services throughout the US energy sector, including water sourcing, transportation, treatment, recycling, and disposal. 

The Challenge

Their team came to us seeking a way to operate their 200+ water pump trucks more efficiently and profitably. They lacked clear data and visibility of their trucks in the field, including: 

  • Route optimization: Without a system in place to optimize fleet routes, travel times ballooned, fuel costs rose, and service times lagged on critical energy infrastructure sites. 

  • Work order tracking: Operational leaders had limited insight into work order status, truck locations, and service progress, eroding their efficiency and customer communication.

  • Asset visibility: They operated without real-time visibility into fleet status and location, further confounding resource allocation and emergency response planning.

The Solution

Our client needed a solution that connected the physical and digital: A service management system that centralized real-time data insights for fleet operations and services. That’s why our team designed and implemented an integrated IoT-enabled solution that blended seamlessly into their operations and delivered end-to-end visibility. 

Our Method

1. Technology Integration

First, our team set up the infrastructure for closed-loop data flow. We integrated ServiceMax FieldFX (Liquid Frameworks) with their existing Salesforce platform and SCADA system (the system that monitors and controls their fleet equipment). Then, we implemented IoT sensors on every truck—bringing real-time monitoring to on-the-ground movement.

2. Work Order Automation

The Narrowstack team harnessed that new data flow to generate work orders automatically in FieldFX based on parameters in the IoT sensors and SCADA system. This increased their efficiency significantly, keeping service on time and maintenance in check.

3. Route Optimization

Using advanced algorithms, our team built a route optimization engine to give our client next-level data intelligence. The engine synthesized real-time truck locations, work order priorities, and operational constraints to determine the most optimal daily routes and smarter dispatch decisions. 

4. Stakeholder Collaboration

Throughout the entire process, we worked closely with our client’s VP of IT and field operators to ensure their new solution adhered to all technical requirements and operational workflow needs—an essential step to promote full organizational adoption and maximize ROI. 

The Impact

The IoT-enabled field service transformation delivered measurable improvements across all key operational metrics, positioning our client as a leader in energy services while delivering profitable efficiencies across their water pump operations.

The system’s new automated dispatching and intelligent routing dramatically improved truck utilization and service efficiency.
